Since we still hadn't bought a Rain Gauge before the storm began, I don't have accurate numbers. Anecdotally (from reports of nearby folks) we got about 3 inches of rain on Friday/Saturday. I don't know what yesterday's rains amounted to.
5/14/2006 -
* Transplanted about 45 of our 172 tomato seedlings into better fed soil. We went down to the Country Garden in Niskayuna (where Kathleen works) to do that work.
* Also, out our large trash items for pickup. Ballston has it's semi-annual big pickup. Due to our high traffic location, I suspect a lot of that stuff is long gone.
Today -
* Our potatoes and jerusalem artichokes arrived from Ronningers. We got 5 pounds of Magic Molly, 5 pounds of Desiree, 10 pounds of Yukon Gold, and 2 pounds of Red Fuseau jerusalem artichokes.
* Transplanted the tray of tomatoes that we brought home (72 plants).
* Started seed for more Gray Zucchini, General Lee Cucumbers, and a whole bunch of herbs.

Rain's a comin'

5/11/2006 -
* Today we pruned out more raspberries. We're now at more than half way through the pruning. Maybe we'll finish before we start getting berries. Heh.
* We also got our copy of the Farmer's Pledge in the mail. Hopefully tomorrow we'll get it notarized and back in the mail...We're not certified organic yet, but we'll get there one day. This is a good first step.
* Also tomorrow...our soil samples finally go out for analysis!
* And finally, the rains begin tomorrow...we still need to replace our rain gauge.

More dull details!

5/7/2006 -
* Planted 15 feet of Pink Beauty Radishes
* 12 feet of Fava Beans (we're experimenting)
* 20 feet of Mustard Greens
* Slept and rested.
5/8/2006 -
* Paul finished mowing the orchard
* Paul & Kathleen got another 20 feet of Raspberries trimmed out...it seems like there's never enough time for this.
5/9/2006 -
* Kathleen planted 100 Cavendish Strawberry plants
5/10/2006 -
* Kathleen and Paul planted 100 Mesabi and 100 Tristar Strawberry plants
* Planted 25 ft of Golden Rocky Yellow Snap Beans, 25 ft of Provider Premium Green Snap Beans, 12 ft of Royal Burgundy Purple Snap Beans

Poor pun. OK. It was one of those days where it rains...then stops...then rains...then stops and gets sunny and cold. Tough to get going on any one task, but I was able to get some planting done as well as tackle a few other chores.

Here's the rundown:
Planted 20' row of Cherrybelle Radishes,
20' row of Kuroda Carrots,
20' row of Beets
80' row of Swiss Chard
70' row of Spinach
I also started to clean the garage and organize my tools (which is a task that will never really be finished). Tomorrow...Beans.

More Peas, some onions and a tiller

Hi...much more to report. We've been busy getting ready for all of the planting in the next few weeks.
4/28/2006 - 2nd row of (variety to come) peas planted.
4/29/2006 - Paul continued with pruning of Raspberries.
4/30/2006 - Started building cold frame. It's leaky and we still have more to do to make it viable. More cleaning of old greenhouse. Burned brush.
5/1/2006 - Onion sets arrived from Moose Tubers.
5/2/2006 - Kathleen and Mom R. collected violets for violet jelly. It's really sweet. Good for PB&Js.
5/3/2006 - Transplanted remaining peppers/herbs. Tiller for Kubota is purchased! Strawberries arrived in the mail.
5/4/2006 - Tilled a portion of the front fields. The fields that were used last year will be cover cropped. The rest will likely house tomatoes beans and squash....we're still working out the what goes where bit.
5/5/2006 - Started seeds for 5 different types of cucumbers and 5 different types of summer squash. Tilled the back fields where the garlic is coming up very nicely (see the picture below)! In these fields we're planting Strawberries, Potatoes, Garlic, Onions, Radishes and Carrots. Changed the crankcase oil and oil filter on the Kubota (transmission is next). Oh....and we planted the onions (the string in the picture is our onion row).
